Outer Banks to Honor 150 Years of Heroic Sea Rescues with Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Celebration

Remembering the Heroes of the Sea: A Celebration in the Outer Banks

OBX, NC – This week, the cozy coastal town of Outer Banks is all abuzz with excitement as it gears up for a remarkable celebration of its rich maritime history. From October 11 to 13, 2024, locals and visitors alike will come together to honor the 150th Anniversary of the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, an organization that played a significant role in rescuing those in peril on the treacherous Atlantic waters.

A Glimpse into Our Maritime Past

The legacy of the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is steeped in bravery and real-life heroics. One notable incident dates back to December 9, 1905, when a vigilant patrolman discovered a steamer, the Aragon, dangerously close to the beach. As he hurried back toward the Kitty Hawk Life-Saving Station, he promptly notified Keeper Avery B.L. Tillett, who wasted no time in requesting backup from nearby Kill Devil Hills Station. It was all hands on deck this night, as crews quickly rallied to the scene.

With well-trained eyes surveying the situation, the crews of both stations sprang into action. The teamwork on display was nothing short of inspiring. On average, an experienced crew could complete a round trip with the breeches buoy every minute and a half. Talk about dedication! When the night was over, the tireless rescuers had successfully retrieved twenty-one survivors along with their personal belongings from the stricken vessel.

After the exhilarating rescue, the survivors were safely escorted to the station, where they found shelter for the next four days. The wrecking crew arrived two days later, and, fueled by persistence, they were able to float the steamer to safety and tow it to port. In the world of life-saving, it’s not just a shift; it can truly be a long, rewarding night of service!

Everyday Heroes in Every Era

The heroism doesn’t stop there! Another heartwarming tale comes from May 1, 1889, when a small schooner named the Beulah Benton ran aground just north of the Oregon Inlet Life-saving Station. Even though the station had closed for the summer, fate had a way of keeping some heroes on duty. Keeper Samuel J. Payne, along with another surfman, was at the station when the ship got into trouble. They quickly hopped into Payne’s own sailboat, launching into action.

With anchors at hand, they tried to help the stranded crew float the boat off the beach. However, with the tide working against them, they had to bide their time and wait for the next high tide. Patience and teamwork paid off, and thanks to their rugged perseverance, the little vessel was eventually freed to continue its journey.

Join Us in Celebration!

All these inspiring stories of valor are merely snapshots of what life-saving crews accomplished back in the day. This week’s celebration is all about remembering these forgotten heroes and spreading the word about their incredible deeds. Everyone is invited to come out and experience the #LegacyofLifeSaving as we share stories, enjoy festivities, and reflect on the remarkable impact of those who risked their lives for others.

Mark your calendars for the October 11-13, 2024 celebration at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station. It’s going to be a lively event filled with activities and opportunities to learn about our extraordinary history. So, whether you’re a lifelong resident or a curious traveler, we can’t wait to see you there!
