BUXTON, N.C. — It’s been a bumpy road for residents of Buxton since the Coast Guard closed their facilities at Buxton Beach due to a petroleum leak back in September 2023. The community has been on edge, wondering what lies ahead as they look to restore their beloved beach.
Recently, the Coast Guard released their findings regarding the chemical levels at the former base. The good news? The report indicated that the chemical levels aren’t at what federal law defines as actionable remediation levels. This essentially means that there’s no immediate requirement for cleanup, which has brought a sense of relief to some. But that doesn’t mean all questions are answered.
Since the leak was first discovered, residents expressed their frustration during various community meetings. Many felt that the lack of communication surrounding the leak and the subsequent cleanup efforts was concerning. “This doesn’t make sense. That’s the frustration that our citizens are feeling, is the fact that it’s been four months and the folks that are supposed to review this haven’t gotten the report,” said Bob Woodard, chair of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, highlighting the community’s anxiety over the situation.
Despite these concerns, the Coast Guard reassured everyone that they would continue to assist the National Park Service and the Army Corps of Engineers in their cleanup efforts. It looks like they are committed to making sure the beach remains safe and enjoyable for everyone who lives here and visits from out of town.
As time passes, many locals are asking what is being done—and what will be done—to permanently resolve the issues stemming from the leak. Locals have questioned what the timeline looks like moving forward. Are we looking at months, or even years, before everything returns to normal?
In the meantime, the community and local officials are staying vigilant, keeping a close watch on the situation. Residents are urged to stay informed and participate in ongoing discussions as more information becomes available. The hope is that transparency will guide the way toward a solution that priorities the health and safety of the people and the natural beauty of Buxton Beach.
For a community that relies heavily on tourism and fishing, it’s crucial to track the situation closely. Beachgoers want to know if they can enjoy the sand and surf without worrying about their safety. In the face of setbacks, the town has always shown resilience, banding together to face challenges head-on.
Though the discovery of the petroleum leak has raised red flags, Buxton Beach is hopeful for a path to recovery. The Coast Guard and local officials are working hard to ensure the safety of the beach, but the community’s involvement is vital. Staying informed and participating in discussions will help ensure that Buxton remains a beautiful, safe haven for all.
Residents are encouraged to keep the dialogue going and remain positive. After all, it’s the strength of this small community that will see them through, no matter what challenges come their way.
