Beach Driving Adventure

Beach Driving Permits Now Available in Nags Head for 2024-2025 Season!

If you’re dreaming of cruising along the sandy shores of Nags Head with your four-wheel drive, we’ve got some exciting news for you! It’s that time of year again! Beach driving permits for the season running from October 1, 2024, through April 30, 2025, are officially on sale.

Get Your Permit!

For those who may not know, you’ll need to have a proper Town of Nags Head permit to legally drive on the beach. Only state inspected four-wheel drive vehicles are allowed, and the driving season is strictly between thirty minutes before sunrise and thirty minutes after sunset. So, make sure to check your sunrise and sunset times!

Now, let’s talk about the cost of these permits. If you’re a resident or property owner in Nags Head, you can snag your seasonal permit for just $50. But if you’re visiting or own property elsewhere, it’s going to be $100. Easy enough, right?

Where to Purchase

If you’re a resident, you’ll need to obtain your permit at the Nags Head town hall. Non-residents can get their hands on a permit either at the town hall, online via the Nags Head website, or at various tackle shops throughout the area. It’s convenient and accessible for everyone.

Important Changes to Driving Regulations

Before you head out to the beach, make sure to keep in mind that the Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills no longer have a beach driving permit reciprocity agreement. What does this mean for you? It simply means that if you own a Nags Head permit, it only allows access to the Nags Head beach, excluding the National Park areas. Likewise, a permit from Kill Devil Hills is only valid in their area. So, double-check which permit you have before you hit the road!

This new rule comes on the heels of some noticeable changes in Nags Head. With a substantial increase in the beach population and the growing allure of the area during the shoulder season, there have been more reported conflicts between beach drivers and those enjoying the sun and surf on foot. To maintain safety and enjoyment for everyone, the town has been actively monitoring the situation.

Beach Conditions and Safety

This year, town officials are paying close attention to beach width and conditions, particularly in the northern end of town. They’ve even had to open and close certain sections for driving several times during the season to ensure everyone can enjoy the beach safely. So it’s a great idea to stay informed about which sections are open to driving and which might be closed. You never know when things could change!

Planning Your Beach Day

As you plan your beach driving adventures, remember that the main goal is to make it enjoyable for everyone involved! Be sure to respect beachgoers who are enjoying the shoreline without a vehicle. Let’s keep the beach a wonderful place for families, friends, and nature lovers alike.

So, gear up for a fantastic season of beach driving in Nags Head! Dust off your four-wheel drive, grab that permit, and get ready to hit the sands, but remember to be safe and considerate while you enjoy the stunning scenery and ocean breeze. Happy driving!
