This Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 10 a.m. to noon, anyone looking to lend a helping hand is invited to join in a beach cleanup. It’s a fantastic way to connect with nature, help out our precious environment, and enjoy the gorgeous coastal scenery.

Where to Go

If you’re interested in participating, you’ll want to meet at the parking area located on NC Highway 12, just north of the Jughandle Bridge. It’s about six miles south of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center, making it easy to find! Just follow the signs, and you’ll be sure to see lots of friendly faces ready to dig in and clean up our beautiful beaches.

What to Bring

comfortable clothes and wear sturdy shoes to keep your feet safe on the sandy or rocky terrain. Don’t forget to bring work gloves to protect your hands while picking up trash. If you have a 5-gallon bucket or a grabber, feel free to bring them along, too. These items can really help make the cleanup easier and more efficient.

Getting Started

Before jumping into the hard work, there will be a brief safety talk to ensure everyone knows what to expect and how to stay safe while collecting trash. This is also a great opportunity to meet fellow participants, share stories, and maybe even make some new friends along the way!

A Great Opportunity

This cleanup event is not only about picking up litter but also about bringing the community together. Forming a bond with other eco-minded individuals can lead to better teamwork in future events. Plus, it’s a wonderful chance to enjoy the fresh ocean air while helping a worthy cause. After all, we all want to preserve the beauty of the Outer Banks for everyone to enjoy, both now and in the future!

Why It Matters

Clean beaches are crucial not just for the planet but also for the wildlife that inhabits the area. Pea Island is home to a variety of birds, fish, and marine life that depend on clean habitats to thrive. By participating in the cleanup, you’re contributing to a healthier ecosystem for these amazing creatures and ensuring our beaches remain a safe place for recreational activities.
