Public Invited to 2024 Polar Plunge to Support Special Olympics Athletes

Dare County is gearing up for its annual Polar Plunge fundraising event in support of Special Olympics athletes. The public is invited to Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head on Saturday, March 9, 2024, with activities beginning at 10 a.m. So far, over 300 people have registered, raising over $40,000 in what has become a record-breaking year for this beloved event.

Schedule of Events

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. with registration. All participants, regardless of pre-registration status, are required to sign a waiver and acquire a wristband before taking the plunge. Following registration, the opening ceremony begins at 11 a.m., featuring an inspiring message from a Special Olympics Global Messenger athlete and the grand lighting of the “Flame of Hope” torch by uniformed officers. Post ceremony, the Polar Plunge begins at 11:30 a.m.

Event Highlights

The plunge itself will be carried out in three 10-minute rounds due to the large number of participants. Registrants will receive their designated plunge rounds on their wristbands at registration. Besides the immersive plunge experience, awards will be announced for various participant categories including Best Individual Costume, Best Team Costume, and Top Individual & Team Fundraiser, to name a few. A safety brief will also be held prior to the plunge at 11:20 a.m. ensuring everyone’s well-being.

Additional Activities and Support Opportunities

In addition to the plunge, the event offers an array of activities including raffles, a photo booth, and sales of Special Olympics merchandise. Essential amenities for plungers, such as changing tents and free hot drinks, are also available. The Dare County Special Olympics team is still on the lookout for event volunteers to assist with numerous tasks. Anyone interested to lend a hand is encouraged to make contact by Monday, March 8, 2024.

Engaging the Community

While taking the plunge is a bracing experience quite literally, the event also welcomes those who would prefer to stay dry. Spectators, sponsors, and donors can take part in cheering on the plungers or contributing to the cause. Fund raised will support year-round sports training, competition, leadership opportunities, and health services for Special Olympics athletes in their community.

Register or Donate

Those wishing to plunge or donate can register or make a donation online. Note that even online pre-registrations need to check in at the registration table, sign a printed waiver, and get a wristband. The Special Olympics has consistently created enriching opportunities for athletes and this annual Polar Plunge is another testament to their tireless effort and community spirit. This is an event not to be missed; make sure to mark your calendars!
