Coastal Flood and Wind Advisory Issued for Outer Banks Starting Wednesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory and a Wind Advisory for the Outer Banks, starting Wednesday, February 27, 2024. This urgent situation is due to the strong southwest winds that are anticipated in the Outer Banks region ahead of a cold front set to move through the area on Wednesday night.

Disaster Risk and Vulnerable Areas

The Coastal Flood Advisory forecasts an inundation of 1-2 feet above ground level in soundside areas along the Albemarle, Croatan, Roanoke, and Pamlico Sounds, including adjacent tidal creeks. Locals are also warned of potential ocean overwash, especially on northern Ocracoke Island.

Besides flooding, the slightly earlier Wind Advisory alerts locals about gusts that could potentially go up to 45-50 mph, affecting all of eastern North Carolina. For safety and to help prepare, the local community is advised to stay updated on the developing weather conditions.

Timeline and Areas of Concern

The Coastal Flood Advisory will commence at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday and extends until 4:00 a.m. Thursday. Meanwhile, the Wind Advisory will be in effect from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday until 1:00 a.m. Thursday. Notably, a Gale Warning has also been issued for all area waterways, indicating the severity of the wind condition.

Where to Get Updated Information

For more detailed and timely information on the local weather forecast, residents and tourists are encouraged to visit the National Weather Service’s official website and their local Newport/Morehead City Facebook page. They can also sign up for text and/or email alerts concerning ferry delays or cancellations via the N.C. Ferry System’s FINS system.

Implications for Transportation

These weather conditions could potentially impact road conditions and cause ferry schedule changes. For this reason, the local population is advised to regularly check the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s official website and Facebook page, as well as NCDOT NC 12 for updates on road conditions. In addition, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page will be sharing updates on local road conditions.
