Celebrate Our Heroes: A Heartfelt Tribute to Veterans in Dare County

When it comes to honoring our brave veterans, the gorgeous town of Manteo in Dare County has gone all out this year! If you’ve ever wondered how communities come together to celebrate and appreciate those who have served, look no further because this event is truly special. Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or just someone who wants to show support, there’s something for everyone.

Getting Started with Veterans Day Celebrations

The festivities kicked off on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the OBX Sporting Events held at the Ramada Inn. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Dare County Veterans Advisory Council set up a booth ready to greet everyone with open arms. If you’re a veteran and haven’t yet snagged your Dare County Veteran Discount Card, this was the perfect opportunity! Just a quick reminder: bring your DD-214 (showing honorable discharge) along with your driver’s license. You’ll also need to prove your ties to Dare County, whether through property taxes or a lease. It only takes about 10 minutes to get this card, which opens up a world of discounts ranging from 10%-20% at over a hundred local businesses stretching from Hatteras to Corolla! That’s a deal you don’t want to miss!

Evening Celebration: Outer Banks Veterans Concert

As the day progressed, excitement built for the Outer Banks Veterans Concert, which took place later that evening at 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Theater in downtown Manteo. Tickets were just $5 for military and veterans, while general admission was only $10 – what a steal! The concert featured talented musicians who brought heartfelt stories to life through their music. It was not just about the entertainment; it was a warm and inviting setting where everyone could come together to honor our veterans.

Honoring the Past: Special Displays

In addition to the music and festivities, two incredible displays, The Wall That Heals and A Thousand Words, were available for viewing. The Wall That Heals features poignant memorials dedicated to Vietnam veterans, offering a reflective space where families, friends, and visitors can pay their respects. Meanwhile, A Thousand Words at Roanoke Island Festival Park showcases stunning photography alongside heartfelt tributes left by loved ones in memory of their veterans. Take some time to check out these beautiful works of art if you can – they’re a touching reminder of the sacrifices made by so many.
