Tragic Loss of a Beloved Stallion in Corolla, North Carolina

Corolla, North Carolina, is known for its stunning beaches and the wild horses that roam freely along the shores. However, a heartbreaking incident occurred recently, leaving the community in mourning for a particular stallion known as Bullwinkle. This spirited horse had made quite a name for himself, not just for his charm but also for his comically audacious behavior among other horses.

A Night of Recklessness

It was the early hours of July 26 when tragedy struck. Bullwinkle, a 10-year-old stallion, was fatally injured after being hit by a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) on the beach in Corolla. According to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, the collision happened close to midnight, and a visitor who was surf fishing witnessed the horrifying event. Thankfully, no other horses were injured in the incident, but the injuries Bullwinkle sustained were severe.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, and a veterinarian, who had been contacted, made the sad decision to humanely euthanize him due to the extent of his injuries, which included a broken hind leg and significant internal damage. It was reported that the UTV driver, a 57-year-old man from Chesapeake, Virginia, fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended and charged with resisting arrest.

A Wild Spirit Remembered

Just a day before his untimely demise, Bullwinkle had been delighting his followers on social media, depicted in a video posted by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. The footage showed him daringly challenging a larger stallion, demonstrating his playful and stubborn personality. This ongoing rivalry had entertained many and showcased the very essence of wild horse behavior.

Despite the fame, Bullwinkle was a true testament to what it means to be wild and free. Herd manager Meg Puckett reflected on this, stating, “Bullwinkle died as wild as he lived; at no point did he welcome our intervention,” emphasizing his natural instinct to remain free and untamed, even in his final moments.

The Impact of Loss

Bullwinkle’s death is not just a personal loss; it serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by reckless behavior in areas where wildlife thrives. Driving off-road vehicles is permitted on certain beaches in Corolla but is subject to strict speed limits to protect both people and animals. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund pointed out that such reckless actions, like the one resulting in Bullwinkle’s death, can lead to substantial suffering and potentially irreparable harm to these fragile populations.

In terms of the wild horse herd, Bullwinkle’s passing leaves a significant void. With the Corolla herd being comprised of around 100 horses, the loss of Bullwinkle’s unique genetics indicates a profound impact on the long-term survival of the population. Puckett noted, “His genetics are gone from the herd forever,” adding that this would have lasting ramifications for future generations. Bullwinkle’s inability to pass on his lineage means that the herd misses out on his strength and the essence he brought to their dynamic.

Farewell to a Wild Hero

As the community grieves, Bullwinkle was laid to rest at a spot that had been pivotal in his horsey battles for dominance. He was buried near the meadow central to his ongoing feud with the larger stallion, symbolizing both his life and the wild spirit he embodied.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund expressed gratitude for being able to provide Bullwinkle with a respectful burial, bringing some solace to a situation that is otherwise filled with heartache. Bullwinkle’s personality may be gone, but his vibrant legacy will forever linger in the hearts of those who loved him and witnessed his wild spirit.
