Excitement in Manteo for the Outer Banks Film Society’s New Season

There’s a buzz in Manteo, North Carolina, as the Outer Banks Film Society kicks off its second season, showcasing a delightful mix of films sure to please every movie enthusiast. After a successful first season, film lovers are eager to dive into a new lineup filled with independent films, documentaries, and even timeless classics.

Opening Night: A Star-Studded Return

The season began on September 17 with a screening of Asteroid City, and the excitement among members is palpable. Gaye Morris, the curator of the film society, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I am thrilled about the film society’s upcoming season and very much looking forward to seeing our members from last year along with some new faces.” Her words reflect the mission of the society: to spread joy and appreciation for fine cinema while offering programming that encourages audiences to explore and be adventurous.

Honoring the Silent Film Era

One of the highlights of this season is the collaboration with The Pioneer Theater, where they will celebrate National Silent Movie Day on Sunday, September 29, at 4 p.m. Free for Outer Banks Film Society members and just $5 for general admission, the featured film will be Buster Keaton’s hilarious slapstick comedy, Steamboat Bill Jr.. This classic, dating back to 1928, brings smiles and laughter as it tells the story of a young man struggling to help his father save his riverboat business from a flashy new rival.

Jessica Sands, the executive director of Dare Arts, shared her excitement, saying, “We are so excited to collaborate with our friends and neighbors at The Pioneer Theater to host National Silent Movie Day in downtown Manteo.” The Pioneer Theater, which has been a staple since 1918, provides a charming backdrop to honor the rich history of silent filmmaking.

On October 1, the Outer Banks Film Society will host its 27th Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival. This event is particularly unique because members will have the chance to watch 10 short films and vote for their favorite.
