Celebrating 150 Years of Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station: A Year of Firsts

This year, the beautiful town of Rodanthe, North Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as it marks the 150th anniversary of the historic Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station. This summer has brought a whirlwind of festivities and significant milestones that truly honor the station’s place in U.S. history.

A Special Debut

One of the highlights in this year’s celebrations is the grand opening of the Little Kinnakeet Life-Saving Station for the very first time. That’s right! For those who have admired the station from afar, the opportunity to step inside and soak in its rich maritime heritage has finally arrived. Visitors are flocking to learn about this pivotal establishment and how it played an essential role in North Carolina’s coastal history.

Coming Together in Celebration

In addition to the new opening, this year also marks the first time that multiple Outer Banks Life-Saving Stations have joined forces to celebrate the arrival of the U.S. Life-Saving Service in North Carolina in 1874. Communities that were once separated by distance and time are now coming together, reflecting the spirit of collaboration and shared history. It’s a beautiful reminder of how these institutions have worked together, saving lives and protecting treasures along the coastline for generations.

Concert for Chicamacomico: A Missed Opportunity

Concert for Chicamacomico, which was set for September 19, 2024. However, due to some unfortunate circumstances, the organizers have made the tough decision to cancel the concert. While this news is disappointing for everyone involved, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the talented musicians who were slated to perform. This includes local favorites like Grace Waters, Mary Joy McDaniels, Barbara & Bryan Blake, the Sweaters, and the nationally-recognized artist, Skylar Gudasz.

For those who may not be aware, Skylar recently released a delightful album titled “Country” on August 9, 2024, and even used the Chicamacomico site as a backdrop for her official music video. Her song “Lovestorypastlife” beautifully encapsulates the spirit of the life-saving station, resonating with the themes of heritage and adventure.

A Unique Way to Support

Although the concert will not be taking place, the spirit of giving remains strong! In support of the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station’s ongoing restoration efforts, commemorative t-shirts and posters are now available for purchase. Described as “the concert that never was,” these unique items provide a stylish way for supporters to contribute to the future of this cherished site. You can find these one-of-a-kind souvenirs on the station’s website, or if you’re in the area, pop into the gift shop located at 23645 North Carolina Hwy 12 in Rodanthe, which is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Thank You, Visitors!

Finally, we want to take a moment to thank the thousands of visitors who come each year to tour the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station. Your love and support help keep the history alive and enrich the experience for everyone who steps through its doors. So let’s continue this journey together, cherishing our heritage and celebrating the resilience of this remarkable institution!

This year’s celebrations are only just beginning, and the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is eager to welcome old friends and new visitors alike. Here’s to a 150th anniversary filled with memories, history, and community!
