Get ready, skimboarding fans! Nags Head, North Carolina is all set to host the thrilling 2024 OBX SkimJam from July 26th through July 28th at the picturesque Jennette’s Pier. This event is shaping up to be an exciting showcase of talent with an international lineup of competitors battling it out for a whopping $15,000 pro prize purse.
The competition isn’t just about the big bucks; it’s also a part of the Skim USA tour, featuring both men’s and women’s professional divisions, as well as a myriad of amateur divisions that promise to deliver some awe-inspiring performances. The professional men’s division will also be a key stop in the world-renowned United Skim Tour (UST), with the OBX SkimJam serving as the third of six total stops for UST competitors.
Expect to see amazing riders like the three-time UST champion Lucas Fink hailing from Rio de Janeiro, and the highly celebrated Gerardo Valencia from Barra de Navidad, Mexico, the 2023 Skim USA Men’s Champion. On the women’s side, you can’t miss Sydney Pizza, the 2023 Skim USA champion from Dewey Beach, Delaware, alongside the talented Chabe White from Mazunte, Mexico, the 2023 UST champion.
Each day starts at 8 AM and runs until around 6 PM, giving fans plenty of time to take in all the action. The pros will compete during the surf’s golden hour, adjusting to the best wave conditions throughout each day. Welcome to the ultimate skimboarding hotspot!
But wait, there’s more! The OBX SkimJam isn’t just for the pros; amateur riders will have their chance to shine too! Competitors are sorted into various divisions to ensure everyone gets a fair shot at glory. For instance, the amateur men’s divisions range from Minis (8 and under) to Legends (50 and older). The women’s divisions include Mini Girls (8 and under) and closes with Women (15 and older). If you’re an amateur looking for some serious fun, the semi-professional division welcomes all skill levels without age restrictions!
Wendy Caputo, one of the contest co-hosts, shared her excitement, saying, “The support of so many local OBX businesses has enabled us to, at a minimum, match our professional prize purse from last year. Our skimboarding community absolutely loves to visit OBX and appreciates all the local support and recognition.” The enthusiasm couldn’t be more contagious as our beach town readies itself for an exhilarating weekend ahead!
The OBX SkimJam is just one exciting stop on the UST tour. Other upcoming events include the Zap World Championships in Dewey Beach, Mulligans Skim Jam in Vero Beach, and the Exile Oktoberfest in Newport Beach, California. Skimboarders will accumulate points throughout these competitions, making every ride and every wave count!
Whether you’re a seasoned skimboarder, a family looking for an exciting summer outing, or simply someone who loves watching some of the most thrilling beach sports around, the 2024 OBX SkimJam is definitely the place to be! Mark your calendars, gather your buddies, and come support both our local and international talent as they ride the waves and chase their dreams!
