16th Annual Killer Dunes Run Announced by Friends of Jockey’s Ridge and Outer Banks Sporting Events for July 4th, 2024

Friends of Jockey’s Ridge, Outer Banks Sporting Events Announce 16th Annual ‘Killer Dunes’ Run

In a press release on May 3, 2024, the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge and Outer Banks Sporting Events jointly announced the 16th annual running of the “Killer Dunes”. This unique competition is set to be held on the 4th of July, 2024.

The Race through the Majestic Dunes

Challenging spectators to conquer the highest natural sand dune system on the East Coast of the United States, the ‘Killer Dunes’ race is situated at Jockey’s Ridge. Participants can look forward to an exhilarating run, jog or walk over a two-mile course designed to test endurance, strength, and agility.

Despite its intimidating name, the event openly welcomes participants of all capabilities, from staunch competitors to casual walkers. As the event organizers keenly remind potential participants, the course is in no way a “walk in the park”. Tackling the towering sand dunes requires a fair share of grit and resilience.

Benefiting the Local Community

Proceeds from the race are pledged to the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge, a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting, preserving and enhancing the Jockey’s Ridge State Park on the Outer Banks. The fund contributes to several projects focused on nurturing local flora and fauna and maintaining the dunes for future generations.

Previous Editions of the Race

The ‘Killer Dunes’ has grown into a beloved community tradition since its inception in 2008. The annual event has seen participants from across the nation and beyond. Its unique blend of competition and community spirit has ensured that the event carries a distinct place in the sporting calendar of the region. With each passing year, the race continues to draw larger crowds, demonstrating its growing popularity.

Looking ahead to the 16th Edition

Preparations are already underway, and organizers have begun taking steps to ensure a successful and safe event this year. With the countdown officially on, participants are encouraged to start their training journey and prepare for the test that awaits. Spectators and supporters too are urged to come forward and cheer the brave hearts that take on the challenge at Jockey’s Ridge.

Come 4th July; the towering dunes of Jockey’s Ridge will witness hundreds of participants sweating it out on the challenging course in their endeavor to conquer the sand hills. An exciting day of grit and endurance awaits.
